What’s Included In Your Initial Psychology Appointment?
Intake and Personal History: We will ask about your background, including family, work, relationships, and significant life events. This helps provide context to understand your unique experiences and influences on mental health.
Presenting Concerns: You’ll discuss the main issues or symptoms that led you to seek therapy, such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or other concerns.
Goal Setting: Together, you’ll explore your goals for therapy, whether it’s improving coping skills, gaining insight into a specific issue, or creating healthier relationships.
Mental Health and Physical Health Assessment: The psychologist may assess any mental health symptoms, ask about past diagnoses or treatments, and inquire about physical health conditions. Since mental and physical health are closely related, understanding both aspects helps in creating an integrated treatment approach.
Introduction to Therapy Approach: The psychologist will explain their therapeutic approach, which may include EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, mindfulness, or another method.
Confidentiality and Questions: The psychologist will go over confidentiality policies and ensure you understand your privacy rights. You’re encouraged to ask questions about the therapy process, fees, or anything else on your mind.
What’s Included In Your Follow Up Psychology Sessions?
Progress Review: Each session often begins with a review of your experiences since the last appointment.
Therapeutic Techniques and Interventions: Depending on your needs and the chosen therapy approach, the psychologist may use specific techniques tailored to help you manage symptoms and work toward your goals.
Exploring Patterns and Insights: Follow-up sessions offer opportunities to delve deeper into behavioral or thought patterns, helping you gain insights into underlying issues.
Skill-Building and Practice: As part of the therapeutic process, you’ll often learn practical skills to handle stress, regulate emotions, or improve communication.
Goal Adjustment and Re-Evaluation: Therapy is dynamic, and as you progress, your goals may shift. The psychologist will regularly check in on your initial goals, adapting them as needed to reflect any changes or new areas of focus.
Homework or Reflection Assignments: Some therapies, like CBT, may include small assignments or reflections to complete between sessions. These encourage you to apply what you’ve learned in real-life situations, reinforcing progress and helping you achieve lasting change.
